University Lecturer and Plant Scientist.
He retired in 1996 with an honorary title of Emeritus Reader in Plant Physiology (Queen Mary University of London).
Barry was born in Burnley, but spent most of his childhood on a hill farm near Newchurch-in-Pendle. He spent most of his adult life working in London and living in Essex.
