Herbert Thomas was the son of Walter Thomas and Nancy Watson.

Herbert was born on Monday 8 July 1889 in Edge Hill, Liverpool, Lancashire.

Herbert married Elizabeth Gertrude Allen in 1913 in the West Derby Registration District, Lancashire.

He had the following children from his marriage to Elizabeth Gertrude Allen:

- Eric Thomas	born on 12 September 1919.
