History of The Red Lion Inn.
The Old Red Lion Inn at Radlett, Hertfordshire, was owned throughout the 19th Century by just two families, first the Clarks and then the Wings, who were in possession until it was demolished in 1905. The Smithy at the Cross Keys was transferred to the other Inn when Tom Wing acquired it, but his son, James, soon set up a separate blacksmith's shop in the yard of the detached flint house across the road. His principle employee was Wm Andrews, who took over the business in the 1880's and built it into a flourishing concern. When young Tom Wing died his widow was persuaded to sell the Red Lion to the newly formed and locally based Hertfordshire Public House Trust.
Will of Thomas Wing.
Last will and testament of me Thomas Wing of The Red Lion, Radlett in the County of Hertford, Licenced Victualler.
I appoint my sons, James W and Thomas W, trustees & executors of this, my will. I direct and bequeath to the said James and Thomas my 4 freehold cottages of Branch Road, Park Street and all my other real estate and all other household and goods stock in trade of a victualler and all other of my personal estate and have power to dispose of at the time of my decease upon trust as conveniently may be. To sell and convert into money such part of my personal estate as shall consist of money, including the goodwill of my business, with power to postpone such sale and conversion for such a period as my said trustee may think proper. I direct my trustees out of the monies to pay my debts and funeral testamentary expenses and to stand posessed of the residue of the said money. To pay and divide the same equally to all my children living at my decease.
His mark.
Witnesses Henry Brabant of St Albans and Marrianne Wing of Elm Farm, Green Street, Herts.
Probate 25 April 1888 granted to James and Thomas.
