James Ibbotson was the son of William Ibbotson and Mary A. James.

James was born on Tuesday 10 August 1880 in Leeds, Yorkshire.

James married Susannah Jackson in 1911 in the Leeds Registration District (Dec Quarter).

He had the following children from his marriage to Susannah Jackson:

- Arthur Ibbotson	born on 2 April 1912 in Hunslet, Leeds, Yorkshire.
- Nellie Ibbotson	born on 17 January 1916 in Castleford, Yorkshire.
- Herbert Ibbotson	born on 20 August 1920 in Methley, Leeds, Yorkshire.
- Harry Ibbotson	born on 29 September 1925 in Leeds, Yorkshire.
- Doreen Ibbotson	born in 1931 (date suppressed).

Details of James's occupation are not known.

James died when he was 83 years old, on Thursday 30 January 1964 in Leeds, Yorkshire.
