John was born on Monday 19 October 1863 in Smaden Head, Eavestone, Yorkshire.

John married Mary Jane (Polly) King on Saturday 10 January 1885 in the Parish Church, Dallowgill, Yorkshire.
The witnesses at the marriage were Margaret Ellen King and Reuben King.
John was 21 years old and Mary was 21 years old when they married.
