Moses was born on Sunday 19 August 1866 in Edge, Slaidburn, Yorkshire.

Moses married Margaret Lawson on Thursday 10 April 1890 in St Bartholomew's Church, Tosside, near Slaidburn, Yorkshire.
The witnesses at the marriage were John Frankland and Harriet Lawson.
Moses was 24 years old and Margaret was 22 years old when they married.
