Oswald was born on Tuesday 11 August 1885 in 44, Grimshaw Park, Blackburn, Lancashire.

He was christened on Sunday 27 September 1885 at St Marys Church, Blackburn, Lancashire.

Oswald married Lilly Martha McDonald on Wednesday 27 December 1911.

He had the following children from his marriage to Lilly Martha McDonald:

- Thomas Cundall	born on 3 May 1913.
- Alice Margaret Cundall	born on 16 April 1916.
- Lilly Isabel (Little Bud) Cundall	born on 29 November 1919.
