The Chew family that I am researching originated from Gisburne in the early 1600's. Gisburne is a village in Yorkshire that is 7 miles from Clitheroe, Lancashire and 8 miles from Colne, Lancashire. The population of Gisburne was 485 in 1801, reached 691 in 1821 and remained between 400-600 up to 1901. The spelling of Gisburne changed to Gisburn when the Railway Company argued that many hours each year could be saved by so doing. The railway opened in 1885.
