Thomas (Tom) Chew was the son of Thomas Riley Chew and Alice Thornber.

Tom was born on Saturday 28 March 1857 in Newsholme, near Gisburn, Yorkshire.

He was christened on Sunday 31 May 1857 at Newsholme, near Gisburn, Yorkshire.

Tom married Elizabeth Cort on Saturday 22 November 1879 in the Parish Church of Tosside, near Clitheroe, Lancashire.
The witnesses at the marriage were George Chew (Thomas's brother) and Isabella Cort.
Tom was 23 years old and Elizabeth was 23 years old when they married.
