Joseph Slinger was the son of Ambrose Slinger and Elizabeth (Betty) Guy.

Joseph was born on Saturday 23 April 1836 in Cocklick End, Easington, Yorkshire.

He was christened on Sunday 22 May 1836 at St Andrew's Church, Slaidburn, Yorkshire.

Joseph married Mary Slaiter in 1859 in Clitheroe Registration District.

He had the following children from his marriage to Mary Slaiter:

- Susan Elizabeth Slinger	born in 1860 in Rochdale, Lancashire.
- Margaret Slinger	born on 12 April 1863 in Forest of Bowland, Yorkshire.
