William Chew was the son of James Chew and Elizabeth Barnfather.

William was born on Wednesday 25 April 1832 in Smallbridge, Rochdale, Lancashire.

He was christened on Sunday 1 September 1833 at Gisburn, Yorkshire.

William married Betty Dearden in 1854 in the Rochdale Registration District.

William's second marriage was to Sarah Dearden in 1863 in the Rochdale Registration District.

He had the following children from his marriage to Sarah Dearden:
