Thomas was born around 1831 in Congleton, Cheshire.

It is thought that he was a child from Robert Cundall's first marriage as Thomas was shown as being a grandson to Thomas Cundall (born 1772/73) on the 1851 census.

Thomas married Esther Brindle on Wednesday 26 January 1887 in St Andrew's Chapel, Chorley, Lancashire.
The witnesses at the marriage were James Taylor and Ann Hudson.
Thomas was 55 years old and Esther was 45 years old when they married.
