Thomas was born in 1841 in Newton Grange, Bank Newton, Gargrave, Yorkshire.

He was christened on Sunday 13 June 1841 at Gargrave, Yorkshire.

Thomas married Jane Ann Little in 1874 in the Cockermouth Registration District.
