Greenwood Chew was the son of Johnson Chew and Margaret Greenwood.

Greenwood was born on Saturday 2 May 1846 in Gisburn, Yorkshire.

He was christened on Sunday 24 May 1846 at Gisburn, Yorkshire.

Greenwood married Eliza Willcock in 1879 in the Sleaford (Lincs) Registration District.
