James was born on Sunday 7 October 1860 in Dallowgill, Kirkby Malzeard, near Ripon, North Yorkshire.

He was christened on Sunday 18 November 1860 at St Peters Church, Dallowgill, Kirkby Malzeard, near Ripon, North Yorkshire.

James married Rosanna Inglesby in 1878 in the Ripon Registration District.

He had the following children from his marriage to Rosanna Inglesby:

James's second marriage was to Emma Elizabeth Bolton in 1890 in the Ripon Registration District.

His gravestone has the following inscription:

In loving memory of Fred, third son of James and Emma Cundall of Warren Lane,
died 19 January 1930 age 26.
The above James Cundall, died 22 July 1946 age 85.
The above Emma Elizabeth, died 4 March 1947 age 79.
In loving memory of Annie S Cundall, their eldest daughter, died 19th January 1954 age 61.
